  • At the University of North Dakota, was initially responsible for overseeing the academic and educational enterprises of the School, including its programs in allied health. Assumed further responsibilities for directing and overseeing the clinical and research portfolios. Recently assumed the role of Interim Dean, responsible for all internal functions of the School as well as interfacing with external constituencies, including the legislature, alumni, and other stakeholders. As Vice President for Health Affairs, responsible to the President for the operation of the School, and for its budget.
  • Intensive study of the U.S. health care system over the past five years (1997-2002), beginning with an M.B.A. to solidify my understanding of the fundamentals of finance, management, marketing, and operations, and to analyze the "re-engineering" that has taken place in the non-medical market place. Currently applying those principles to the health care arena in an intensive study of the American health care system at the University of Michigan, supplemented by independent studies with several faculty members at the School of Public Health
  • Departmental representative on the Detroit Medical Center (DMC) Physician System Organization that served as the clearing house for negotiating, implementing and monitoring all managed care products of the seven hospital DMC system
  • Participated in and provided key input to multiple and diverse system-wide committees, including the Finance, Capital Equipment, Bylaws, Information Services, Cardiovascular Services Planning, and Strategic Plan for Primary Care Committees
  • Held multiple leadership positions within the American Heart Association Michigan Affiliate, including Chair of the Research Fellowship, Research Forum, and Research Committees; appointed Treasurer, Vice-President, and President-Elect
  • As Chief of Cardiology at Wayne State University, directed and coordinated the growth of the division from a 3 member group to one with 25 faculty members, with commensurate growth in the academic, research, and clinical programs, including an expansion of the cardiology fellowship program
  • Member of the American Heart Association Transition team and Joint Operating Committee that managed the integration and downsizing of four affiliates into one functional unit (Midwest Affiliate)
  • Participated in five departmental chair searches, and two internal departmental reviews
  • Over 200 publications, including 77 papers, 19 review articles, 45 book chapters (e.g., Braunwald, Harrison's, Cecil), and 72 abstracts
  • 23 grants
  • Over 250 talks and presentations to medical and lay public in the local region, state, nation and internationally (international talks in Ireland, France, Poland, Hungary, India, Thailand, Dominican Republic)
